Winter is a Great Time to Explore Crater Lake!

November 22, 2023|Wilderness Watch

Winter is a season that some people dread, with its cold temperatures and shorter days. However, for those who embrace the beauty and adventure that winter brings, Crater Lake National Park is a hidden gem that should not be missed. Located in southern Oregon, the park transforms into a winter wonderland, offering a wide range of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. One of the highlights of visiting Crater Lake in the winter is snowshoeing along the park’s stunning west rim.

Crater Lake National Park is known for its deep blue lake, formed by the collapse of a volcano thousands of years ago. During winter, the park receives heavy snowfall, blanketing the landscape and creating a serene and magical atmosphere. The west rim of Crater Lake offers breathtaking views of the lake and its surroundings, making it an ideal destination for snowshoeing.

Snowshoeing is a fantastic way to explore the park’s winter landscape and experience nature in a unique and memorable way. Unlike traditional hiking, snowshoeing allows you to walk on top of the snow, providing an opportunity to reach areas that would otherwise be inaccessible. Whether you are a seasoned snowshoer or a beginner looking for a new adventure, Crater Lake’s west rim is the perfect place to start.

Before setting out on your snowshoeing adventure, it’s important to prepare and pack the right gear. Dressing in layers is essential, as temperatures can vary throughout the day. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep you dry, add an insulating layer for warmth, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer layer. Don’t forget to wear warm socks, gloves, a hat, and sturdy winter boots. Additionally, sunscreen and sunglasses are a must to protect your skin and eyes from the sun’s reflection off the snow. Lastly, pack plenty of water and high-energy snacks to keep you hydrated and fueled throughout your journey.

Once you have your gear ready, head to the park’s west rim for an unforgettable snowshoeing experience. Sky Lakes Wilderness Adventures offers Guided Snowshoe Tours, led by knowledgeable guides who will enhance your visit with interesting facts and stories about the park’s history and geology. These walks are a great option for those new to snowshoeing or visitors who want a guided experience. However, if you prefer to explore on your own, you can also Rent Snowshoes to do a self-guided tour on several marked trails within the park that you can follow at your own pace.

As you embark on your snowshoeing adventure, be prepared to be amazed by the stunning views that await you. Crater Lake, with its intense blue color, contrasts beautifully with the pure white snow, creating a scene straight out of a winter postcard. The west rim trail takes you along the edge of the crater, offering panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding snow-covered peaks. Along the way, you will encounter ancient trees draped in snow overlooking the magnificent blue water of the lake with picturesque overlooks. Keep an eye out for wildlife, as they may be spotted in their winter habitats. The silence and tranquility of the winter landscape create a sense of peace and solitude that is hard to find elsewhere.

Aside from the stunning scenery, snowshoeing at Crater Lake National Park also provides a great workout. Traversing through deep snow requires more effort than hiking, engaging your muscles and cardiovascular system. It’s a fun and effective way to stay active during the winter months and burn some calories while enjoying the great outdoors. Plus, the cold temperatures will keep you nice and cool, making it easier to push yourself a little harder.

Remember, winter is a magical time at Crater Lake National Park, and snowshoeing along the west rim is an experience that should not be missed. Whether you are a seasoned winter adventurer or simply looking for a new way to enjoy the season, Crater Lake’s snow-covered landscape is waiting to be explored. So bundle up, grab your snowshoes, and embark on an unforgettable winter journey at one of America’s most breathtaking national parks.
